After watching it last year, I started paying attention to how much added\u00a0sugars were in the foods that I eat. Last month, I tracked the amount of\u00a0added and artificial sugar* I consumed during an average workweek (Monday \u2013 Friday) and counted the added sugar in things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jams<\/li>\n<li>Peanut\/almond butter<\/li>\n<li>Fage yogurt<\/li>\n<li>Breads\/grains\/cereal\/granola<\/li>\n<li>Canned beans<\/li>\n<li>Non-dairy creamer<\/li>\n<li>Sweets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is a picture of my weekly sugar intake:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yamairah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sugar-tracking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-331\" src=\"https:\/\/yamairah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/sugar-tracking.jpg?w=520\" alt=\"Snack-size baggies with teaspoons of the amount of added sugar eaten each day.\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Every\u00a0<strong>4 grams of sugar<\/strong> on a nutrition label is equal to\u00a0<strong>1 teaspoon<\/strong> of refined white sugar.\u00a0After 5 days of tracking, I was averaging about <strong>9 teaspoons of sugar<\/strong> each day**. Not horrible, but also not the recommended amount.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much sugar is recommended?<\/strong> <a title=\"Read the WHO article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/science\/sciencenow\/la-sci-sn-added-sugar-who-six-teaspoons-per-day-20140305-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">The World Health Organization (WHO) says adults should consume on average no more than <strong>6 teaspoons<\/strong> of sugar a day<\/a>. <a title=\"Read the American Heart Association article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/GettingHealthy\/NutritionCenter\/HealthyDietGoals\/Frequently-Asked-Questions-About-Sugar_UCM_306725_Article.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">The American Heart Association recommends <strong>6 \u2013 9 teaspoons<\/strong> a day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much sugar do most people\u00a0consume?<\/strong> Sources vary; one states: <a href=\"http:\/\/fedupmovie.com\/#\/page\/about-the-issue\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cIn 2012,\u00a0Americans consumed an average of 765 grams of sugar every 5 days, or 130 pounds each year.\u201d<\/a> (That\u2019s about <strong>38 teaspoons<\/strong>\u00a0per day.) Another states: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/GettingHealthy\/NutritionCenter\/HealthyDietGoals\/Frequently-Asked-Questions-About-Sugar_UCM_306725_Article.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Americans eat about <strong>20 teaspoons<\/strong> of sugar a day according to a report from the 2005\u201310 NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) database.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Actually <em>seeing <\/em>the sugar in those baggies made things more tangible and made me want to take action. That\u2019s what prompted me to finally do the <a href=\"http:\/\/fedupmovie.com\/#\/page\/fedupchallenge\" target=\"_blank\">10 Day Sugar Free Challenge<\/a>. I looked at a few different blogs for inspiration and recipes to follow. I liked the info I found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thekitchensnob.com\/fed-up-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. We (the hubby and I) are doing what I\u2019m calling a \u201cModified Plan A\u201d version of the rules. I\u2019ll be posting pictures of what we ate and links to the recipes we tried soon!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#999999;\"><em>* According to Fed Up, our bodies\u2019 process all sugars the same, including lactose. I love milk, and I personally don\u2019t think lactose is <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">that<\/span> bad for me, so I chose to exclude it from this count.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#999999;\"><em>** Because I was tracking my intake, I was hyper-conscious about how much sugar I was consuming, so I may have erred on the side of lower-than-normal-intake that week.
